Thanks to TempoVIP and TL Portafolio, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a familiarization trip to Morocco last month. I can't wait to share my inspiring experiences with you. Over six unforgettable days, I immersed myself in the vibrant city of Marrakesh, the breathtaking beauty of the Atlas Mountains, and the serene landscapes of the Agafay Desert.

The journey started with my flight from Vancouver to Newark, followed by a connecting flight to Marrakech, as there are no direct flights from Vancouver. Upon arrival, the immigration and security process was quick and efficient, and I was pleasantly surprised by the organization of the airport. Our tour guide welcomed us and took us to our hotel, where we could refresh after the long flight. Before leaving the airport, I suggest getting a SIM card from a kiosk for convenient internet access while in the country. Major operators like Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and Inwi provide excellent network coverage, including 4G. For currency exchange, it’s wise to change only a small amount at the airport for immediate needs and to exchange larger sums in the city for better rates, as most hotels match bank rates. Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted in larger stores and restaurants, but it’s always prudent to inquire in smaller places, even if they display a sticker on the door. Keep in mind that American Express is less commonly accepted.
Our first stop was the stunning Palais Ronsard, an oasis of peace and luxury. The rooms and suites feature terraces and gardens overlooking a park adorned with six private pavilions and swimming pools nestled among centuries-old olive trees, roses, and fountains. I explored a range of accommodations, including several charming riads that provide a perfect retreat in the heart of the medina. There are also options available a bit farther out for those seeking tranquility away from the bustling crowds. I was amazed to discover two magnificent Virtuoso resorts with a golf course just 30 minutes from the city, where Moroccan hospitality seamlessly blends with Western comfort. For those who appreciate Andalusian architecture and modern designs, various choices await.
The local destination management team made our tour of Marrakech truly unforgettable. I highly recommend taking part in artisan tours and a calligraphy workshop, where you can learn to write your name in Arabic. It’s a meaningful way to connect with the rich culture. Exploring the city on a sidecar was another highlight—an exhilarating and unique way to immerse yourself in the rhythm of everyday life in Marrakech. Food plays an essential role in Moroccan culture, and experiencing this firsthand was incredibly enriching. We savoured a delicious foodie tour through the souks and later embraced the enlightening experience of an organic cooking class. Learning about people through their cuisine was remarkable.
One of the most rewarding parts of the trip was our cultural immersion adventure in the Atlas Mountains. We started with a gentle hike to a Berber village, where we were treated to stunning views of the mountains and lush valleys. Upon arriving in the village, we wore traditional attire, shared meals, and danced with a warm and welcoming Berber family. Just 1.5 hours from Marrakech, this experience allowed us to connect deeply with local customs and traditions. We stayed in the beautiful Kasbah Bab Ourika, a five-star accommodation primarily constructed from clay using traditional Berber techniques. The thick walls effectively insulate against heat and cold, while solar panels supply hot water for underfloor heating. The house harmoniously blends into the landscape, concealed by terraced gardens, which offer breathtaking views of the sunset over the Atlas Mountains.
The desert beautifully capped our trip to Morocco. We embraced the tranquility of an elegant White Camel campsite nestled in the heart of the Agafay Desert. This exclusive sanctuary invites guests to pause and immerse themselves in the surrounding beauty and stillness. During our stay, we enjoyed camel rides and experienced the thrill of a quad ride.
I returned home with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for Moroccan culture and heritage. Morocco has left a lasting imprint on my heart, and it is certainly a destination worth exploring. I hope I’ve shared this connection with you. Let me know if Morocco is on your bucket list!
